My PC Is Slow & Locks Up Or Freezes
Its a very common complaint. The scary part is the most common cause, malware. The second most common cause of a slow PC is junk-ware, or stuff you don't need running. Many people just feel like they are being too picky about speed and don't do anything about it for some time. This is very dangerous because whatever is making you slow down is also doing very bad things to your computer and using it to attack others. Don't tolerate a slow PC, get it fixed before it gets really expensive, like when your identity is stolen.

The first thing is to make sure the machine is clean. That can be done by following the instructions in "The Clean PC, a do-it-yourself guide" in the "Computer School" section here. If you have trouble, we can help. You need to get the PC completely cleaned up before doing anything else, then we can look at the start-up programs.

Remember: Don't use MSCONFIG or REGEDIT! These tools are for specific and temporary tasks only and should never be used for normal operation. There's also a large chance of serious damage to the system.

Most programs have a setting in their options to prevent them from loading on start-up and that is the best way. SpyBot Search & Destroy has a great tool to do the same with other programs, but each one should be considered very carefully. Google can be a source for good info (and bad!), or you can list what you see and we'll tell you what can safely be removed or disabled. In just a short time and for no cost, you can fix your own PC to make it work like its new.

Start with the "Computer School" articles and then ask any questions you may have. Reading the articles first will give you the tools you need to ask useful questions..

Happy computing and let us know if we can help.
